A custom bus shelter designed for a site along Observatory Drive on the UW–Madison campus, overlooking Lake Mendota. More than a functional transit structure, the Madison Oculus is a civic landmark — a framed view to the lake that invites pause in an otherwise transient space.
The Concept The design is an abstraction of an eye, with the shelter's primary arching semicircular canopy forming the upper lid. Behind it, oriented toward the lake, the symbol from the Madison city flag — itself an abstraction of the State Capitol dome — is reinterpreted as the iris and pupil of the eye. The use of a civic symbol was a central requirement of the project, and here it does double duty: grounding the structure in its place while completing the ocular metaphor.
The Experience The name Oculus refers both to the eye motif and to the structure's function as a viewport — a deliberate frame through which the lake becomes the focal point. Waiting for a bus becomes a moment of civic connection, orienting the visitor to both the landscape and the city they are in.
